At present there is only a small difference between the maximum rate of the State Pension (Contributory and Transition) and the reduced rate payable to people who have an average of at least 20 contributions a year or 24 for the transition pension.

From September 1st 2012 there will be 6 rate bands instead of 4 and these rates will apply to people who become entitled to a pension on or after September 2012.
