Mar 8, 2011Listowel ARA to Take Part in Historic St. Patrick's Day Parade

AN INTERNATIONAL FLAVOUR TO LISTOWEL ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Listowel will experience a real international flavour to this year’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with over 100 people visiting the Town from eight different European countries.  Organised by the Listowel Downpatrick Linkage Group, visitors will attend from Downpatrick, Italy, France, Portugal, Hungary, Romania, Latvia and Poland.  The event is being held as part of the EU Town Twinning ‘Meeting of Citizens’ Programme and delegates will share their experiences of being members of the EU and how intercultural dialogue can develop stronger links among EU citizens.  Central to the three day programme is participation in the Listowel St. Patrick’s Day parade, which will include the 50 strong Wieniewa Brass Band from Poland.

“We are delighted to welcome our fellow EU citizens to Listowel this year to join us in celebrating St. Patrick’s Day” said Gerry Duggan, Chairman of the Listowel Downpatrick Linkage Group.  “We have met many of the delegates in previous visits to Downpatrick who expressed a keen interest in visiting Listowel.  We are sure that they will have a very enjoyable experience and will fondly remember their visit.”

One of the main events of the programme will be the signing of a formal twinning agreement between Listowel and Michalowice, Poland which will take place on Friday March 18th.  During their visit delegates will be staying in Listowel and Tarbert and will also visit tourist attractions in Listowel and the North Kerry Region including Fenit Harbour, St. Brendan’s Statue, Ardfert Cathedral, Rattoo Round Tower and Ballybunion.  A day trip to West Clare and the Cliffs of Moher is also being organised.

The Listowel Downpatrick Linkage Group is always looking for new members and anyone interested in joining should contact Cara Trant in the Seanchaí Centre, tel. (068) 22212.
