Ballindine and Irishtown Active Retirement members on tour!
By Maura Mullarkey
To mark the ESB's 90th anniversary, Ballindine/Irishtown/Milltown Active Retirement Association visited Ireland's greatest engineering developments at Ardnacrusha, Co. Clare. Members were welcomed at the newly refurbished visitors' centre before going out on site to view the impressive headrace canal, locks and tailrace.
Inside the station, the living heritage of the Shannon Scheme was brought to life through a series of animations which celebrated the history and impact of this iconic project. They were given access to the very heart of the station with unique views of the turbine hall and visited the original control room.

After completing this wonderful educational tour, the coach driver (John of Glenside Bus Hire) took the scenic route, along Lough Derg, via Killaloe and Ogonnelloe, to Tuamgraney, to Nuala's Bar & Restaurant, where they were welcomed by their hosts, Nuala and Paul Kilkenny and family. After a delicious meal, Paul spent some time with his former neighbours and friends from Ballindine, most of whom he had not seen for many years. It was a most enjoyable day!
