Waterford's Golden Years Festival 2010 was simply brilliant according to the 300 visitors who came to the City for the occasion. Opened by the Mayor, Cllr. Mary Roche, on Monday 15th November, the Festival hosted a Song Contest and Cabaret on the Monday and Tuesday Nights and a Gala Festival Ball on the Wednesday night.
Speaking at the Gala Ball on Wednesday, the Mayor said she was delighted with the continuing success of the Festival. "It has progressed to become one of the major festivals hosted in the City and the Golden Years generation certainly know how to enjoy themselves" Mayor Roche declared.
The National President of Active Retirement Ireland, Tom O'Mahony complimented the Waterford Golden Years committee "They are doing outstanding work, this is really a most enjoyable event that we all look forward to every year"
Peg Tebay, Chairperson of the Golden Years Festival said "The support the festival gets from our main sponsors, Waterford Area Partnership, Waterford City Council, Havenwood Nursing Home & Retirement Village and the wider business community ensures the high standard we are able to achieve".
Day time activities included a visit to the new Home of Waterford Crystal, Indoor Bowling in the Butler Centre organised by Kevin Molloy, National Vice-President Active Retirement Ireland and local bowlers Micheal McGrath and Michael Byrne.
The Sing-a-long in the Large Room of City Hall and the tour of the Theatre Royal were highlights of the Festival.
The guests really enjoyed the Ecumenical Service held in Christchurch Cathedral on Tuesday 16th and appreciated the welcome they received from Dean Lester.
They visitors went to the Waterford & Tramore Racecourse for an Indoor Race meeting in the afternoon and this was really good fun.
Babs Murphy, Festival Secretary said "The schedule allowed our guests plenty of time to shop and they all spoke of the great value and the pleasant staff in the shops, they said the staff went out of their way to be helpful"
With another successful year behind them the Golden Years Festival committee is already planning for 2011 when the Festival will be held from the 14th -16th November. Booking for places has already started.
