Older people who have worked in the UK have been asked to see if they are eligible for its winter fuel allowance. 130,000 people living in Ireland could be eligible for the payment worth up to €350 each year. This follows a European court decision which ruled the scheme must be extended to people who have worked all their lives in the UK but did not take up the grant.
There are 131,000 Irish pensioners who are eligible for the UK's winter fuel payment and many are not aware of this. Those who did not apply for the payment before leaving the UK may claim while living in Ireland.
TD Frank Feighan said €9.5 million had been paid out by the UK under the scheme since 2002.

As a footnote, all older people in receipt of a UK pension are entitled to a Medical Card, all you need to do is prove you are in receipt of this pension to claim. The British Government Pay the Irish Government a lot of money for this so we would recommend you do claim if eligible.
